Ansar Allah, the Yemeni rebel group popularly known as the Houthis shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone over Saada province in northern Yemen near the border with Saudi Arabia.

The source added that the UAV was a Chine-made Wing Loong Pterodactyl I and was shot down while doing sorties over Houthis positions in the area. Pictures of the UAV’s wreckage were released by the Houthis’ media wing.

The Wing Loong Pterodactyl I is a Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), developed by the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group in the People’s Republic of China. Intended for use as a surveillance and aerial reconnaissance platform, the Pterodactyl I is capable of being fitted with air-to-surface weapons for use in an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) role.

The Pterodactyl can carry the BA-7 air-to-ground missile, YZ-212 laser-guided bomb, YZ-102A anti-personnel bomb and 50-kilogram LS-6 miniature guided bomb.

The drone was used by UAE in Operation Decisive Storm to kill Saleh Ali al-Sammad, a senior Houthi leader in Yemen in 2018.
